Editor’s note: As the year comes to a close, we look back at the 10 most popular stories of 2017. Stanford disses Whataburger during Alamo Bowl halftime show

Image
We Texans tend to be a good-natured lot. We laugh off visitors who are surprised to learn we don’t travel everywhere on a horse. We even allow some ribbing about our accents (heck, we’re even fond of making fun of that ourselves). But there is one thing guaranteed to get our dander up –and that’s taking jabs at Whataburger. But that’s just what the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band did Thursday night during the… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston http://ift.tt/2C8J3PQ from WordPress http://ift.tt/2lqHkds

The year in theater: Behind-the-scenes drama and Harvey set the stage

Image
In a year that seemed to give us a decade’s worth of Houston theater news, 2017 produced almost as much behind the scenes drama as it did stunning performances. TUTS finally found their new artistic director Dan Knechtges and gained an executive director Hillary Hart, along the way. Stages announced plans for a $30 million, three-theater campus, the Gordy. AD Players moved into their dazzling, new Jeannette and L.M. George Theater, only to lose the… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston http://ift.tt/2CmXTyY from WordPress http://ift.tt/2C9dSnp

Texas bands and holiday pomp highlight top 5 shows to see

Image
The week before New Year’s Eve is usually a great time for Texas bands to hit the road for short tours, since very few nationally touring acts are playing shows. Houston will be visited by a handful of popular Texas acts this weekend worth checking out, plus one last holiday-themed show for those who hadn’t had enough yuletide cheer. The 12 saddest Houston restaurant closures of 2017

Image
This year saw incredible growth for Houston restaurants; each of the city’s three most-recent James Beard Award winners opened new establishments, several of the city’s rising stars in both the dining room and the kitchen stepped out on their own, and out-of-town concepts continued to raise the game. While the scene continues to grow, the city also lost several significant restaurants during 2017. Whether due to increased competition, the post-Harvey economic slowdown, declining quality, or… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston http://ift.tt/2BWpNkg from WordPress http://ift.tt/2pQnxto

Party like it’s 1989 on New Year’s, says Neiman Marcus fashion guru

Image
It seems fitting that we should head into 2018 with shoulder pads in our jackets and a strong red lip. Fashion’s proverbial time warp is coming back around primarily to the ’80s, where shoulders are powerful and paired with slim leggings, catsuit and yes, even the questionable stirrup pant. This New Year’s Eve, go ahead, make an entrance, and take a stand in velvet, tassels, embellished heels, and shoulder-grazing earrings. These are throwback pleasers that… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston http://ift.tt/2CeUB3s from WordPress http://ift.tt/2CiveNY

The year in music: the buzz that defined the Houston scene in 2017

Image
Arguably no other city captured more national and international attention this year than Houston — from the Super Bowl to Hurricane Harvey, and the magical Astros World Series run. The same can be said for the music scene that drew attention for major events and a fast growing, strong local coalition of talented musicians, promoters and event organizers putting on world-class shows and festivals. These are some of the highlights from the past year that… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston http://ift.tt/2BPsCUk from WordPress http://ift.tt/2C4eB9D

Doris vs Tilman: Which hot new steakhouse really sizzles?

Image
December has been a busy month for restaurant openings, as some of this year’s most eagerly anticipated concepts have made their debuts. Food obsessives are flocking to Nancy’s Hustle, see-and-be-seen types are evaluating Emmaline, and Francophiles are diving into duck confit at Maison Pucha Bistro. While they’re all worthy of patronage the two restaurants that seem to be generating the most buzz (in terms of recent conversations and inquiries from CultureMap readers) are the city’s… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston http://ift.tt/2E4iUz0 from WordPress http://ift.tt/2pUxSVt

In the Bayou City, where the median rent is $1,532, 32.8 percent of adults live together, up from 24.3 percent in 2000. Drive-thru Gourmet: how does this Classic compare to Chick-fil-A?

Image
This week I reached out for a Classic Chicken Sandwich, new on the “$1-$2-$3 Dollar Menu” at America’s league-leading burger barn, McDonald’s, with 14,000 restaurants stretching far and wide. McDonald’s welcomes the New Year with the return of its skinflint Dollar Menu, last seen in 2013. But is it really a “Dollar” Menu if this chicken sandwich costs three of ’em?
