All Things In Houston TX

While Houston is in the depths of a historic freeze, some spacey locals are celebrating a major cosmic milestone. NASA — and Johnson Space Center, locally — are toasting the landing of Perseverance, the amiable roving vehicle, on Mars. The reliable rover, nicknamed “Percy,” touched down on the rocky Red Planet at approximately 2:55 pm Houston time on Thursday, February 18, to cheers at JSC and at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston https://ift.tt/2ORsIX2 from WordPress https://ift.tt/3saoZlx

As the City of Houston’s public works department works to stabilize the region’s water pressure, the area continues to be under a boil notice advisory until at least Monday, February 22 — under current estimates. (Residents are encouraged to report broken pipes by calling 3-1-1.) That means Houstonians are scrambling to find fresh drinking water — especially those without the requisite electricity to boil said water. With that in mind, a local official is coordinating… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston https://ift.tt/3dr37yw from WordPress https://ift.tt/3s3OIw4

Houston has endured a grueling week and a temps not seen in decades. Thousands are without power, water — or in many cases, both. Some areas present challenges such as no electricity and iced-over roads and could be that way for days. Yet, as the city slowly — very slowly — begins to thaw and reopen, some weekend events are still on for those looking for ways to (understandably) de- stress. In the midst of a historically awful winter weather event in which millions of people across Texas were without power, Texas Senator Ted Cruz was caught trying to make a tropical getaway to Cancun. Cruz and his family were photographed by fellow travelers at the George Bush Airport in Houston on February 17, as well as onboard United Airlines flight #1020. “The confirmation is from multiple eye witnesses of @tedcruz and @heidicruz in Cancun,” noted… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston https://ift.tt/2Zs75yH from WordPress https://ift.tt/3bmCJmw

With only one more night of freezing temperatures on the horizon and power restored to most customers, life in Houston is slowly returning to normal. That extends to a basic city service — trash pickup. The City of Houston resumed garbage collection beginning Thursday, February 18. Crews expect to collect the rest of Monday’s pickup and begin their normal Tuesday routes, according to a press release issued by the Solid Waste Management Department. Other services… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston https://ift.tt/3u8LbOV from WordPress https://ift.tt/2NIKaws

Some 1.39 million locals were without power on Wednesday, February 17. CenterPoint energy reports that number has dropped drastically as of Thursday, February 18 to 40,000, but the cold reality is that Houstonians are suffering without power — especially heat. To that end, dozens of local organizations and businesses have opened their facilities to those in need of a respite. Between visits to area grocery stores or shopping centers, stop by these spots for a… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston https://ift.tt/3qzHOhF from WordPress https://ift.tt/2OF0yhJ

The horrors of 9/11 and the clamor to bring those responsible for the attacks to justice dominated much of the news in the early 2000s. Few people not in the know of inner government workings were aware of the lengths the Bush administration was going to extract information, including holding people without charges for years at a prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. One of those people, Mohamedu Slahi (Tahar Rahim), is at the center of… from News Feed – CultureMap Houston https://ift.tt/3ubAf3g from WordPress https://ift.tt/37qCkOZ
